Winton Wetlands

Located in Victoria's North East on the Hume Highway between Benalla and Wangaratta, the Winton Wetlands (formerly Lake Mokoan) is currently being restored as a natural wetland. The 8,750 hectare Winton Wetlands Reserve includes 3,000 hectares of wetland surrounded by red gum and box grassy woodlands.

Winton Wetlands will be the largest wetland restoration project in the southern hemisphere. The restoration the wetlands is of national scientific, cultural and environmental significance.

The project aims to create a facility for wetland education, and develop nature based tourism activities and recreation.

Jo Bell Heritage Services Director, Jo Bell, has been closely involved with this project over the last eight years and has conducted a number of archaeological assessments in the Wetlands which have resulted in the identification and recording of numerous Aboriginal objects and places.
